National Medical College was established in the year 2001, promoted by the “National Medical College Company Pvt. Ltd.” under the Chairmanship of Dr. Jainuddin Ansari, an outstanding surgeon who has earned national and international credentials for the promotion of Medico-Social services. National Medical College is one of the best medical colleges in Nepal, in fact the number one among all medical colleges in terms of infrastructure, academic facilities and modern sophisticated medical equipments.
 
 
The Curriculum Development and Monitoring Committee of National Medical College has drawn the detail program outline for the MBBS course in strict adherence to the curriculum of Tribhuban University and the requirements of Nepal Medical Council. The Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery program runs over a total period of five and a half years (four and a half years followed by a compulsory rotating internship of one year). Integrated teaching, problem-based and community oriented and community based learning are the key features of the core curriculum for the MBBS program.
The phasing of the core curriculum of MBBS program is well designed to facilitate the systematic teaching and learning process.
 
Phase – I : First year:
i) Integrated Basic Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-chemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology)
ii) Community Medicine.
iii) Clinical orientation (History taking/Communication skill)
 
Second year:
i) Integrated Basic Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Bio-chemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology).
ii) Clinical Orientation (clinical examination skills)
 
Phase – II : Third year:
i) Community Medicine (Applied Epidemiology, Family Health Exercise)
ii) Forensic Medicine.
iii) Clinical Disciplines: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology/ Obstetrics
iv) Clinical trainging at Teaching Hospital.
 
Phase – III : Fourth year:
i) Clinical Disciplines: Psychiatry, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Orthopedics, Radiology, Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Accident & Emergency Medicine
ii) Community Medicine (Community and Clinical Experience and field management)
iii) Clinical training at Teaching Hospital.
 
Fifth year: Clinical Rotation in major subjects with case presentation and seminar.
 
EVALUATION:
The University examinations are held at the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and final year.

Internship:
A student after passing the final MBBS Examination has to undertake compulsory rotating internship of one year (at the Teaching Hospital of this medical college) for which he/she must get registered provisionally with Nepal Medical Council. On completion of internship he/she will be given full registration by Medical Council as per its rule and regulation for practicing allopathic system of medicine.

The National Medical College offers Postgraduate Medical Courses (M.D./M.S.) in almost all the clinical and pre-clinical subjects. The course outline for the Postgraduate programs in various subjects is strictly based on the curriculum of Tribhuban University. Our Postgraduate degrees have wide recognition and acceptance which are highly valued for employment in medical institutions across the globe.

National Medical College is an International Medical College; which aims to produce most competent and knowledgeable medical doctors for meeting the growing demands of medical manpower of this country Nepal in particular and of the “Global ViIlage” in general. ln addition, the college has also in its mission to perform scientific research and provide vvith quality health services to the sick and the needy. With these aims and objectives in view, the college has been established in accordance with the international standard set for medical education by The WorId Federation of Medical Education and in accordance with the norms set by the Nepal Medical Council, the Medical Council of India and the Medical Council of other developed Countries. The Degree of the college has wide recognition and acceptance which the college believes will be highly valued by employers and Medical lnstitutions, the details of which has been given under the heading “Linkage Scenario”.
 
LOCATION
 
 National Medical College is situated at the South-eastern Sub-metropolitan city of Birgunj, the commercial Capital of Nepal, along the Indo-Nepal border. The college campus is only 3 kms away from the Indian border town of Raxaul (in Bihar State) which is well connected with most major cities and towns of India by road and railway. Birgunj has good road linkage with most cities and towns of Nepal. It is a matter of just 15 minutes flight to Kathmandu, the national capital.
The entire establishment of National Medical College, viz, Pre-clinical and clinical departments, Teaching hospital, School of Nursing, Students hostels, Quarters for faculties and other staff, Library, etc., all are located within one single campus spread over a fairly large track of about 40 acres of land. This is the unique advantage of this college as compared to many other Medical College in Nepal, which facilitates the teaching staff and students for better understanding with each other & work together for a better academic environment.The National Medical College Campus is located at the outskirt of Birgunj city in a peaceful and pollution free environment. There is round o’clock local transport facilities available between the college campus and the markets and other utility places in the city.Birgunj is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual city where Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and other ethnic communities live together in peace and harmony. The commonly spoken languages include Nepali, Bhojpuri, Hindi, Urdu, English, Newari and some other local dialects.
As far as climate is concerned, Birgunj experiences temperature ranging from 8oc (the lowest in winter) and 39oc (the maximum in summer) and the average rainfall registered during the rainy season is 80 mm. Birgunj, the second largest city of Nepal has a population of nearly 6 hundred thousand people. The city provides a wide range choice of hotels, restaurants, shopping centres that suit the pockets of every class of people. There are many places and spots of recreation and amusement in and around the city.Regarding places of worship, there are many Hindu and Buddhist temples, Mosques, Guru Dwaras, and Churches to provide spiritual and religious needs of people. Most of the major banks of Nepal (both public and private sector) have their branches at Birgunj. Many of these banks are joint ventures with the leading banks of India and some other SAARC nations. This gives a major advantage to students coming from India and other SAARC countries. One of the major banking networks of Nepal has a branch within the National Medical College campus with 24 hours ATM facility, which facilitates easy money transaction matters for the students, staff & the patients.
 
Infrastructure and facilities, in adequate quantity and of high quality, is key factors for a Medical College to attain and sustain Excellency in Medical Education and Health Services. National Medical College has the world class physical infrastructure and manpower, equipments of most advance and sophisticate technology. The college gives utmost priority to develop and have proper management of all necessary facilities for academic, extra-curricular and recreational activities of the students.
 
TEACHING HOSPITAL
 The physical infrastructure of the 1050 bedded Teaching Hospital of National Medical College has been designed and built to suite the international standards with all the essential and desirable facilities. The hospital complex houses many multi-storied buildings that accommodate the OPDs and wards of the clinical departments, Emergency department, Operation Theatres, Central Laboratory, Blood Bank, Pharmacies, and Canteen etc. Fully furnished residential accommodation has been provided to all the Medical Doctors, Nursing and other Para-Medical staff in close vicinity of the hospital. Round the clock Ambulance, Pharmacy, Blood Bank services are available within the hospital complex. The OPDs of the various departments together have a capacity to treat about 1000 patients daily. The average daily OPD attendance is between 600 to 700. The average Bed Occupancy in the wards remain around 75 percent throughout the year.
Here are some special features of the Teaching Hospital: 
• The Radiology Department has the most advance and sophisticate medical equipments such as Multi-slicer C.T. Scan, Color Doppler, Ultrasound, Digital Mammography, etc.
• The Surgery Department has several super specialty units such as Plastic-Surgery, Uro-Surgery, Pediatric Surgery in addition to the fully computerized Endoscopy facility.
• The Medicine Department has fully equipped I.C.U., C.C.U., Haemodialysis unit, TMT, Holstar and Echo-Cardiography facilities.
• The Pediatrics Department has a separate Neonatology Unit with a most sophisticated 20 bedded NICU
• The Department of Orthopedics has the facility for Digital C-Arm and spinal surgery.
• The full fledged physiotherapy centre has the most advance and sophisticate equipments/ instruments.
• The Preventive clinic has specially trained Doctors & Para Medical staff for the separate units like DOTs clinic, Immunization cell and Counseling cell.
• A full fledged Disaster Management Unit in full preparedness with manpower and materials.
 
ACADEMIC COMPLEX:
 The Integrated Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) Block houses the Pre-Clinical departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Microbiology in addition to the departments of Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine. Each of these departments has fully equipped laboratory, museum, departmental library, Seminar/ Tutorial rooms and adequate rooms for faculty and staff. Given the highly integrated and community oriented curriculum of the Medical and Nursing Courses, this is a major advantage of having all the Basic Medical Science departments and the Community Medicine departments located in a single block. 
 
LECTURE THEATER COMPLEX
 Altogether there are eight lecture theatres organized in two blocks (each having four theatres). Each of these well ventilated lecture theatres are vary spacious, fully air-conditioned and equipped with all modern audio-visual equipments. The capacity of the individual theatres varies between 200 to 250 seats.
 
LIBRARY NETWORK
A well organized library with rich stock of reading materials can be described as the life line of any academic institution.
Each of the Clinical, Para-Clinical and Pre-Clinical departments has well organized Departmental Library with wide collection of text/reference books and Journals in their respective as well as allied subjects. However, the central library remains the core of the library network of this college. The Nursing Campus has its own separate library network.
 
CENTRAL LIBRARY
 
 The Central Library is housed in a separate huge and beautiful double storied building located at the center of the college campus. It has been acknowledged as one of the best libraries in Nepal.
The central library can accommodate about 250 readers at a time. Separate reading space have been provided to the faculty members, Postgraduate students/interns and the undergraduate students. Seating comfortableness, ventilation and lighting have been well taken care of. There is adequate provision for drinking water and toilet facility in each floor.
The Central library has a very rich collection of more than 12 thousand volumes of Text/Reference books (of many titles in each subject).It regularly subscribes more than 75 National/International Medical Journals covering all the Clinical, Para-Clinical and Pre-Clinical subjects in addition to a long list of WHO periodicals/reports.
The library offers internet/e-mail and photocopy services to its readers. There is the Audiovisual sections for self learning by students through the use of videos, slides and CD-ROMs. The members can borrow books under home issue system as per the rules of the library. Strict adherence to code of conduct inside the library is a must for all categories of readers.
RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION
 National Medical College has provided well furnished residential accommodation to all undergraduate and Post-graduate students; Faculty Members; Nursing and other technical staff. There are separate hostels for Boys & Girls students. Furniture, food, recreation and all other aspects of comfort have been given high priority in the hostels for students. Facilities for Outdoor/Indoor games, Gymnasium, Aerobic exercise hall adds to the attainment of Physical and mental fitness of the students.
 
 BOYS HOSTEL
 
 At the present, the hostels for boys together have 500 rooms with fully furnished single seated accommodation with toilet and small pantry attached. There are excellent facilities for indoor/outdoor games, Gymnasium etc.
 
 GIRLS HOSTEL
 
 At the present, the hostels for girls together have 400 rooms with fully furnished single seated accommodation with toilet and small kitchen attached. There are excellent facilities for indoor/outdoor games, Aerobic exercise etc.

Post Graduate Students Quarter
There is a separate apartment for residential accommodation for the P.G. students. Each student is allotted a flat that consists of one living room with toilet attached and a kitchen.
Faculty Quarters
All the faculty members have been provided with spacious and well furnished residential quarters within the college campus. There is a separate block of quarters having more space and facilities for all the Heads of the departments.
Medical Officer’s Quarters
All the Registrars and Medical Officers have been provided with spacious and well furnished residential quarters within the college campus. 
Nurses Quarters
Nursing staff have been provided with spacious and well furnished residential quarters within the college campus.
 
AUDITORIUM
 This is a huge and beautiful auditorium with the capacity to accommodate about 1000 persons. The auditorium is used for cultural as well as scientific programs like Seminar/Conferences/ Workshops etc.
The Nursing Campus comprises of the academic building, the central library, Nursing student hostel and quarters for the Nursing faculty. The National Medical College Teaching hospital is just a minute’s walking distance from the Nursing Campus.

Academic Building
The multi-storied academic building houses the lecture rooms, examination hall, faculty rooms, Principal’s office, laboratories and the examination and admission section. There are altogether six lecture rooms, each having the capacity to accommodate 60 students. These lecturer rooms are well ventilated and have been provided with the modern sophisticate Audio-visual equipments. The examination hall has the seating capacity of 200. There are five well equipped laboratories. The examination and admission section deals with all matters regarding admission of students to the various programs and conduction of the examinations. There are four well furnished rooms for the Nursing faculty members. 
Central Library
The Nursing Campus has its own library network. The Central Library is housed is a separate multistoried building adjacent to the academic building. This library has a wide collection of text/reference books and is fully self sufficient regarding books in all the medical subjects as well as the basic and specialized subjects in Nursing. Students and faculty members can borrow books from the library under the home issue system as per rules and regulations.
NURSING STUDENT HOSTEL
The hostel for the Nursing students has a capacity to accommodate 300 students in well furnished double seated rooms. There are good facilities for indoor/outdoor games and other recreational activities of the students. The hostel mess provides very hygienic and nutritious vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food at a very reasonable rate.
Nursing Faculty QuartersThere are sufficient numbers of very specious and well furnished quarters for the nursing faculty members in a separate block within the residential complex of National Medical College Campus.
TUITION   FEES & OTHER CHARGES   (NO DONATION)
A.   Tuition Fee for whole MBBS or P.G. Course as per rule & regulation of National Medical College.
B.   University Registration fee, Examination fee, Medical Council fee will be charged as per rule.
c.    Registration fee and Admission fee for MBBS course IRs.45000.00/- yearly & for                                  P.G.course IRs. 46250.00 Yearly.
D.   Caution money IRs.50000.00 refundable.
E.    Hostel charge: single accommodation room having attached bathroom with hot & cold water               and Small pantry facilities IRs. 40000.00 Per annum including free Electricity up to 15 units.
F.     Food charge : IRs.46000.00 Annually.
